This course is designed to provide candidates with a knowledge and understanding of current relevant legislation and the practical skills to enable them to safely operate a winch for cable pulling activities.

Course Content

  • The Law ā€“ Regulations & LegislationĀ  (including: The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 & The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1998)
  • Introduction to the winch ā€“ explanation of function and controls
  • Installation & setting-up procedures, including manual handling techniques
  • Pre-operational checks and periodic inspections
  • Safe operating techniques, raising and lowering – laden and unladen
  • Lifting accessoriesā€“ selection and inspection
  • Safe slinging techniques
  • Pre-setting hydraulic pressure/pull load
  • Basic maintenance
  • Environmental considerations ā€“ ground conditions & weather: wind, rain, frost, snow etc
  • Manufactures guidelines for fault diagnosis, cause and remedy
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Course Objectives -

On successful completion of this course, candidates will be able to:

  • Understand current relevant legislation
  • Identify hazards and the precautions needed to overcome them
  • OperateĀ safely with minimum risk of injury and/or damage to equipment and property
